Primarily electrically designed by analsysis software for the freqeuency response of the driver unit, matching the parabolic diaphragm shape, dimensions and material (composite kevlar) with the magnetised voice coil. Once the electrical design is understood, it's onto the mechanical design to achieve the best product. Using stiffer and lighter materials (for the diaphragm and basket) increases the speaker's frequency response when energised. Hence it's a combination of engineering (both electrical and mechanical) know how that provides the best product. Skills required include part design, assembly design, casting, composites and tolerance analysis.
