Product Design Example - Automotive Brake Caliper
Part design driven by finite element analysis (FEA)
Designed strictly to known duty cycles giving quantitative tensile stresses that must not be exceeded. This gives optimisation for both strength and durability, but the parts must also be optimsed for reducing weight giving cost savings across the product's life span. A well known material gives good quality SN (stress to number of cycles to failure) curve data, used with a high degree of confidence. Ultimately, the FEA results are prooved out using the ''make it and break it' philosophy with severe testing. A combination of CAD and engineering principles were required, including part design, assembly design, castings, gears&springs, hydraulics&pnuematics and mechanisims.
