FEA Case Study: Results Von Mises

Complete Von Mises stress plot of the wheel and tyre
Setup: The key (colour bar) has been set to show a range of 0 to 100,000 mN/mm^2. Since 1MPa = 1N/mm^2 then this range is from 0 to 100MPa. Hence, the visible Von Mises stress in the side wall of the tyre is around 70MPa. Von Mises Stress: Von Mises stress (positive numbers) is the sum of the principal stresses acting in the 3 planes (X,Y & Z), where a ductile elastic material is said to yield if the Von Mises stress exceeds the material's yield stress. It does not state whether the stress is tensile or compressive and which direction it is acting in (a scalar rather than vector quantity), it is the resultant yield stress acting in a specific area. Very useful for engineering materials since it effecitvely gives you the average stress in an area and is relied upon heavily for predicting stress.
Displacement Result:The maximum displacement is 210mm. We do not yet know where the deformation is occuring and how it contributes to the stress results, but a large deformation is present at the loading surface on the tyre.
