Despite most manufacturing being 3D with CAD data driving the manufacturing, the 3D part is not usually interogated for the engineering detail, namely tolerances, surface finishes and manufacturing instructions. Having a 2D engineering drawing (2D CAD drafting) resolves these issues and aids communication through the supply chain. So from a general assembly to part detailed drawings, 2D CAD drafting is usually required to best communicate the design intent to the rest of the supply chain so that project may progress or issues be discussed.
